Re:Progress report on the research project on the competition between Eurasian Collared doves and Mourning doves.

Dear Mr. White:

We would like to thank you for allowing us to perform this research project for your agency. As you are aware, the invasion of the Collared dove in the 1980ís marked a change in the ecosystem for native Mourning doves in the U.S, primarily the southeast.

The attached progress report outlines our status on the project. In the report we include the work completed and problems encountered as well as steps taken to alleviate such problems.

Sincerely,

Philip Earhart

Progress Report:

We began work on the project in the latter part of July when we began trapping birds from the Manchester, TN area. Both species of birds presently inhabit the area which made this location a prime spot for trapping. The birds were then taken to a holding facility located on the Tennessee Technological University campus.

As of today we have currently performed 3 of the 6 trials we are planning for the study. We have encountered very few problems. One problem we have faced is a shortage of browntop millet which is one of the types of seed used in the study. To solve this problem we have found another source located outside of Cookeville, TN to purchase the seed.We are planning on waiting on all of the data to come in before any analysis is performed so as not to distort the data.

All other aspects of the study are currently on schedule and are going as planned.I am attaching a schedule of what is planned for the study. We plan on having the completed presentation on Dec. 3, 2003 and a completed write up of all work as well as the analysis of the results by Dec. 5, 2003.If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.
