††† 0.5†††††††††††††† 1.Title:Competition Between Mourning Doves and Eurasian Collared Doves.A research project conducted by Philip Earhart, undergraduate student in Wildlife and Fisheries Science, Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville, TN, 38505.

††† 1.5†††††††††††††† 2.Project Summary:Are Mourning Doves and Collared Doves Competing?Collared Doves are an exotic species.Collared Doves are physically larger which could give them an advantage.Does competition exist? How much? The species will be allowed to interact and will be observed during interactions.I expect that there will be competition between the two species.

††† 2.0†††††††††††††† 3.Introduction/Background:Mourning Doves are among the most important game birds in America.2.4 million were harvested by 46 million hunters in the 1980ís.Collared Doves are becoming more and more prevalent.Mourning Dove populations have been documented to drop when Collared Doves come into the ecosystem.Collared Doves are native to Sri Lanka and India. They are more aggressive than Mourning Doves. They have the potential of displacing native species as well as introducing diseases.

††† 0.5†††††††††††††† 4.Hypothesis:There will be competition between the two species and Collared Doves will displace Mourning Doves.

††† 2.0†††††††††††††† 5.Materials and Methods:The birds were trapped from areas where they already coexisted. The birds will then be housed at the TN Tech Aviary in separate pens unless involved in study.Birds will be fed ad-libitum unless a study is taking place and then the birds will be fasted for 12 hours prior to study.Birds will then be placed in larger flight pen where they will be able to interact and compete for 6 different types of seeds.Observations will be taken for 30 minutes on data sheets.

††† 0.5†††††††††††††† 6.Expected Results and Benefits:The identification of problems between the two species and further applications to combat the problem.

††† 0.5†††††††††††††† 7.Timeline:The project began in early summer and phase 1 should be complete by the end of Fall semester 2003.
